Inheritance money

Is it illegal to accept bank account money from a person with your last name who died and doesn't have any other family if you have been contacted by his lawyer to accept the money but are not sure if the person is related to you?

Does it sound like something you would be allowed to do? Let's say you accepted the money. If some where down the road it is found out that there are rightful heirs to this money they could and should pursue you for it.

Accepting money that you are not legally entitled to inherit is a bad idea. There is always an alternative beneficiary for the funds in the lineage. In the event that the next entity in line discovers that the party in front of them unlawfully claimed funds that they would have received, they are likely to prosecute that act and seek reimbursement.
