Legal Question in Construction Law in Georgia
Building permit
We are finishing our basement and have hired a contractor so that we may obtain a permit. The contractor has been fully aware that we want to permit. Framing is complete and they just came back and told us that the permit will be $2400 instead of the $550 oringinally discussed and stated in our contract. They said that we are within city limits and have to pay impact fees. I looked up the info on line and the amount is correct. They are trying to steer us away from the permit. I heard a new law passed in Jan. 07 that is very strict about not permitting. Would someone let me know the ramificaitons of not permittting and if you think I should fight with the contractor to at least pay half.

Re: Building permit
We don't know your city or county, and can't guess what they may do. It will be much more than $2400 worth. Perhaps more importantly, don't plan on selling the house without dealing with the issue. How "fight" or negotiate with the contractor is up to you.
