Legal Question in Consumer Law in Georgia

Inflation of vehicle price illegal?

After signing papers over a week ago to purchase a used car, I found out (from a finance company mgr/friend) that I had been ''spotted'' Today, I was told that I had to pay an extra $1500 to get financing approval. When looking over my contract, my friend told me that the dealership had committed fraud by inflating the original listing price of the car by $1300 and that this could be the reason the finance company the dealer wants to use won't finance the car. She said that it is illegal for a dealership to raise the selling price from the listed price. Is this true?

The dealership says I have to pay the $1500 or turn the car back over to them. They wouldn't discuss the issue of the inflated price with me at all.

YOur friend is badly informed. When you sign a contract and agree to a number, you are bound by it. In the future, read what you sign and see a lawyer before signing. You also NEVER should buy a car withoiut preapproval for financing from your bank or credit union; it is always a bad idea to shop without that. At this point, you are stuck with your deal.

While we might assume you meant that the contract price was higher than the prior agreed upon price, you provided no explanation whateoever about what you meant by "inflation."

If the document you signed a week ago was in fact a contract, both sides are bound by its terms. Consult with a local attorney to have it reviewed.
