Legal Question in Consumer Law in Georgia
Legal documents and name change
Does a woman's name automatically change when she marries? I never changed it with Social Security or employer, etc for 20 years of marriage. Now the DMV is demanding the last name match on drivers license and SS card, and they canceled my drivers license since they did not match. I do not want to change my name and mess up SS records, etc but I don't know how to prove to DMV that I kept my maiden name.

The obvious answer is to go to the DMV office with the documents and discuss it with them. You also do not state why your licence apparently had the wrong name in the first place.
Re: Legal documents and name change
It sounds like you changed your name on your license. If so you have to get a lawyer to file in Superior Court to change your name back. Current Federal law requires your Social and drivers license to match.
(People married recently do not have this problem as the application for a license now says what you did with your name, but, years ago, it was done solely by what you did, and as soon as you changed your name on one document, you chose NOT to keep your maiden name).
If you're in metro Atlanta we can file this case for you. In some cases, we can also get the state to delay your suspension if you reacted soon enough.
