Legal Question in Consumer Law in Georgia
Past residence says I owe them 3,500 in back rent
I was notified today by a loft housing company that I owed approximately 3,500 in back rent and other fees because I didn't give proper notice that I was leaving. I didn't terminate the lease early and gave them the required 60 days notice that i was leaving and not renewing my lease (i have no copy of 60-days notice but copy of lease). They are now acting like i've lived there the whole time and owe them all of this money, which I don't because i moved into another place and have my name on the lease there.
Also, when i left there, i had major trouble getting my security deposit back and called in to get it back, and no one ever mentioned the outstanding money that i was supposed to have owed them.
They are swindling me here. They have turned the debt over to a collection company. Can you give me advice? Do I take them to small claims court? Can you walk me thru the steps?
Thank you for your time.

If the lease required notice and you didn't give it, you owe the money. Assuming that your security deposit matter is resolved, I am not understanding why you'd want to save them the filing fees to get you into court and sue them; that doesn't make sense. Examine the lease to determine if their numbers are right. If not, you may want to let a lawyer examine it to discuss your response.
