Legal Question in Consumer Law in Georgia

My son who is a college student just received a complaint from a law firm representing a credit card company for a debt under $1000. Should we contact a local attorney to help him in filing an answer? He does not have the funds to pay the entire $960 and they are unwilling to accept payments.

Assuming it is valid debt, I am not sure why paying a lawyer, rather than the debt, would be an option? Filing an answer just leads to more fees and expenses in the lawsuit, and in the end, the debt is still there, with growing interest (perhaps with the creditor's legal added on). Perhaps a part-time job to work off the debt would serve two purposes.

A lawyer would charge more than the amount of the debt, so why not just pay the debt?
