Unhappy with quality of materials used in a cabinet reface

I entered an agreement to have my cabinets refaced on 12/19/05. The work was to begin 1/2/06. During the inital and only visit I showed the saleman the cabinets I was going to buy, he stated that they could reproduce the exact same cabinet. The door I picked is a solid maple mitered trim with a chocolate glaze..it is beautiful.I asked for a catalog to pick my cabinet trim. He said he did not have one but that they would do whateve I wanted. I stated I DID NOT want cheap plastic or ''fake'' wood. Again, I went thru several cabinet catalogs I had and showed him exactly what I wanted, I asked if we should detail my requests...he said ''oh no, we will take care of everything. A installer has spent approx. 6 hours in my home removing the cabinets aand install the facing and the trim. Upon seeing the trim-which is not what I asked for and very cheap looking fake wood..I called the office and stated I was unhappy and not sure if I wanted to continue the project. They became very upset and insuisted I let them hang the cabinets to ''really see''. I refused. They then sent the owner and the salesman to my home. The salesman lied about many of my requests and they continued to try to force me to hang the doors.I have to meet today. I want out!

Re: Unhappy with quality of materials used in a cabinet reface

The problem is the apparent lack of any writing that sets forth your agreement. You mention "detailing" your requests for the dealer, and that he did not think it was necessary. However, a written agreement is to protect YOU for this very situation. If this case came before a judge, all he/she would have is the testimony of each side, on an items that is very much based on personal taste. That does not mean you would automatically lose - but you have the burden of proof if you sue them, making it more difficult. That said, perhaps you can either negotiate with the company to get you what you want, or a decrease in the price so you can let someone else finish it out. You do not mention whether you have paid them, but obviously your bargaining position is a little better if you have not. Keep in mind they may file suit against you to collect based on the work they have done. In the future, document all agreements to avoid these problems.
