Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

I assisted a "friend" extensively (monetarily) while we were in college together. Most of the times i considered my donations "gifts" but there were few instances where I clearly dictated that I would require the money to be repaid, and he agreed. He has since dropped out of college and now lives in a different state than where I attend college. How do I go about getting my money from someone in a different state, who is most likely unemployed.

Three problems:

(1) Can you produce the promissory notes so you can prove the loans?

(2) Are you willing to travel to the other state to file suit?

(3) How do you plan to collect when there is nothing to collect from?
