Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Authorized User on Spouse's Card

I was added as an authorized user to a few of my wife's credit cards. At one point she fell behind (90 days+) with these accounts. I contacted the cards and asked them to remove me as a user and to delete the info from my credit report. Sears did stop reporting, but would not delete the item from my report. They told me that it was illegal to do so! Is this true? If so, why did the other two remove the record completely?

Re: Authorized User on Spouse's Card

My guess is that while you were listed as an authorized user you got caught up in the arrears...you say its your wife, they say its both of you. Removing credit info against you while you were responsible may not be "illegal" it simply may not be "appropriate". If you want your credit cleared you'd have to pay off your wife's debt (since you might be on the hook for that) and then they'd probably remove you from their crosshairs...

Re: Authorized User on Spouse's Card

There is nothing "illegal" in removing erroneous information from your credit report; I would recommend that you ingnore the self proclaimed "legal expert" answering phones at Sears.
