Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia
Old Broken Lease debt still on credit report
In 2002 I rented an apartment, $800 per month. Lived in the apt 4-5 months. Lost my job and divorced. Couldn't afford it any more even though I tried. Finally was served with an eviction notice, with a date to be out, I was out by that date. Now in 2009 I'm trying to clear up my credit report, it says I still owe $4000. Am I still liable even though I was evicted & its been since 2002? How do you get this off of your credit reprort pay it Or fight it.

Liability and credit reports are two different issues. You are generally liable forever and they can make collection attempts indefinitely (with some restrictions). They can even sue and get a judgment if not properly defended. One option is to pay your obligation with an agreement they will not report it. As far as the credit report, since you don't provide specific dates of the events you mention, it can't be answered. What is seven years from the default date?

If you broke a lease, you owe the balance if that is what the lease provided.
It will age off your credit report after 7 years. Depending on the date of the judgment and whether it gets renewed they still can collect from you via various means such as garnishment against your wages and bank account.
