Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

I recently got a call from a law office stating that they have recieved my c.c. bill from collections. THe man intimidated me into telling him where i worked. He told me that since i lived in georgia he can take me to court for breach of contract with the c.c. company...is there a law in georgia that allows for a company to garnish wages and take me to court?? i explained to him that i was a full time student and was trying to make the payments, but he told me if i didnt send him a check or give him a c.c. to pay the $3,900 dollars that he would continue with filing a law suit...at are my options?

Bankruptcy would usually be a VERY poor choice for a student geting out of a $3900 debt (or even more). The obvious, and much better, option is to take a semester or year off from school while you work to settle your debts. Presumably you will be trying to get a job after you graduate. Employers check credit reports and see how you handle finances and responsibilities and the choices you have.

If you owe a debt and have not paid it, it would be very common for you to be sued. Once you lose the case, the creditor can garnishee your wages and bank account, and attach your assets, such as a car or home.
If you are over your head in debt, talk to a debt collection/bankruptcy lawyer to see your options. You may, for example, possibly be able to wipe out the debt via Chapter 7. My office handles such matters. Do not wait until you get sued, and stop talking to creditors by phone, something that no one should ever do.
