What you should do is get an attorney to review your documents. Often, lenders, in the small print, have the right to get the insurance you were supposed to get and then charge it to you.
You probably don't need to pay a lawyer in addition to paying for the insurance. Virtually all loan documents require insurance and allow them to get it if yours lapses. Read your loan documents. It is no excuse it might be In "small print."
