Most such programs are scams, so yes, that can happen. CLOSE the account and get a new account at a different bank. Then see a lawyer. Appropriate debt counseling comes from lawyers, not from "debt counselors."

You should have your agreement to get the answer. We don't have it.

Not properly. However, as noted by Attorney Riddle, no attorney but you knows what the agreement says. Did you cancel in writing? When did you send the cancellation? When was the money taken out? Have you disputed this with your bank?

I would respectfully take issue with Attorney Ashman's comments. Not all debt management companies are scammers. Many are and that is why you have to thoroughly check them out before you sign. You also need to understand the program and what is to be done and the consequences.

There is a difference between debt management and debt settlement. If you are going the debt management route, I would only use a non-profit debt management company which is a member of the National Foundation for Consumer Credit - www.nfcc.org. You can find a local member agency in your area.

If you are interested in debt settlement, I have some suggestions and do the work for Georgia clients. I give free email consults and charge $50 for a 30-minute phone consult. I charge $50 for simple document review. I would be willing to review your agreement and discuss reputable debt resolution options with you. Please contact me at [email protected] if interested.
