Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Collection Agency

Iam divorced. Divorced in 2006. I have just received bills from a cllection agency. Bills that were made in 2003 when I was legally married to my ex-husbad. Now, he is contacting the bill collectors and having bills sent to me. I thought that when you are married, your husband is responsible for all the bills when both names are the record. One was hospitable bill (I had a allergice reaction and they had to rush me to the hsopital), another is a fitness club that my ex-husband enrolled in. Am I responsible

Re: Collection Agency

You are responsible for bills and accounts in your name. Your post does not tell us what is in your name, though presumably the hospital bill would be. Your apparent idea that woman somehow are relieved of liability when they get married is not true at all.

Re: Collection Agency

Joint debts belong to both parties. Your husband is not responsible for any bills unless the divorce decree says he is, and, even then, you remain responsible to creditors. Your attoeney in your divorce certainly would have told you this.
