If you have a past due debt, interest accrues and they don't have to try and collect. Once past due they can collect until the statute of limitations runs. If you can't pay, you see a lawyer. Do not talk to the creditor before you do. You determine if you have defenses, and also what options you may have which might include not paying, bankruptcy, and settlement.
