Credit card/debit information

I recently went to a video store to join their club. They asked for either a credit card or a debit card. I thought this was illegal for business to ask for such information now, or was it just if you were writing a check?

Assuming the "club" is to rent videos (you provide no details), of course they want a method of payment. This is common. If you do not agree, do not join.
