can a debt collector garnish benefits from a bank account that i receive my veteran benefits in for education.?

Veteran's benefits should be exempt but if you are talking about a student loan that you get under the GI bill, then the answer is yes, they probably can. The way to avoid this is by having a bank account that the creditor cannot find.

Since you are a former member of the armed forces, consider banking at USAA or one of the armed forces credit unions (Pentagon Federal or Navy Federal). Failing that, bank at some other online bank (like ING Direct, ally Bank or US Bank), at an out-of-state bank, at a credit union or some other very small community bank located 25-50 miles from your home.
