Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Identity Fraud

Okay plain and simple. I have lived in MD all of my life and have never been to geogia. Have proof of employment and residents in MD, but a gas & electric company in georgia has forward me to a collections agency that is showing up on my credit report. saying that I didn't pay them 283.00. I never lived in georgia and this is not my debt, trying to contact them but can't. what can I do?

Re: Identity Fraud

If all else fails, you could file a declaratory judgment action in Georgia or, quite possibly in Maryland against the Georgia utility. That would get there attention and cause them to listen to what you have to say.

Re: Identity Fraud

Get a copy of all three credit reports from the three main credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian), and contest the debt for any of the reports it shows up on. Dispute it in writing, with the credit reporting agency, the collection agency and the utility. Do it by certified mail, return reciept requested. Tell the collection agency in writing that you dispute the debt and want them to stop contacting you.
