Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Lawyer letter threatening sheriff visit

I recently received a letter from a law firm or supposedly a law firm. They said that if I didn't respond, they may send a sheriff out to my house to serve me with papers. Is this a common practice?

You didn't say what the letter was for, but it sounds like you have a delinquent bill or unpaid claim against you. It is normal for collection attorneys to write you, and if you ignore them, it would be very common for them to sue you. That suit begins with a deputy delivering a summons and complaint to you.

Yes. The demand letter for payment is a common first step in a potential lawsuit, the one just prior to actually filing the lawsuit.
