Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Medical bill collections

Today I learned I owe a dr. 1200.00 from 2005. I thought this bill had been paid as I have heard nothing from the office since 2006. I received a payment in full request today. I am now unemployed and feel they should have dunned me while i was working during that time. What are my rights since it has been over 3 years of no contact.

Re: Medical bill collections

I am not sure how you thought it was paid, if you did not pay it, but, generally, a creditor or collector can collect for years. Just as a delay on their side does not make it go away, a delay by you not paying does not make it go away. Call and they might work with you.

Re: Medical bill collections

Assuming the debt is yours you owe it. Your options are to try and figure out how to pay it, or to see a lawyer. Assuming you have other debts and are unemployed, bankruptcy may be a way out, so that is an option a lawyer may advise you about. If you are in metro Atlanta and wish to consider bankruptcy, go to my website, get a free worksheet, and call me for a consultation as to your options.
