Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

I paid off a doctor bill, then I received a check stating that I had over paid, after cashing the check I received a bill stating that I owe them $38.00 dollars. Now they want to send it to collection agent, because I refuse to pay because I paid the bill completely off. It was their miscalculation on how much I had over paid them. Am I obligated to pay this?

In my experience, healthcare providers are great at providing health care but really really lousy at billing. I don't care if it was their mistake or not and morally you ought to pay the bill if you want to continue using them for healthcare. You got the treatment, right? Moreover, I would not let my credit get ruined over a $38 bill just because you need to prove a point.

That said, speak to the billing office and see what can be worked out and see if they will adjust the bill at all since they were at fault here.

If you actually owe the money and they simply erred in billing, you owe the money. Instead of ruining your credit report for 7 years over not paying, call them and either pay it or work it out if you feel it is an error ASAP. It would be very foolish to bear the increased costs of a lowered credit score over $38 that you appear to owe.
