Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

phone bill from 6 yrs ago

In 2002 I disconnected my phone service from verizon in Texas and moved. I fowarded all of my mail. In Nov. of 2008 I received a notification of a bill from verizon in the amount of 455.00. The paperwork that the collection company sent actually said that I owed 18.89 at the time of the original bill. Now that it is six years later this is my first notification that I owed them and am assuming that the remaining 437.00 was accrued due to late payment. Since this is the first I have ever heard of this bill and they have never contacted me by mail or phone, (both have always been listed) am I liable for all of the late fees associated with this bill. Even though this is the first I have ever heard about this debt. It was also never on my credit. I would gladly pay the 18.89 originally owed but why all of the late fees. Thank you.

Without getting into the nature of all the late fees and whether or not they are all appropriate, it was your responsibility to resolve your account when you moved. You certainly should not have relied on mail forwarding, which can sometimes take a few weeks under normal circumstances. Further, most utilities will change your adress in their records. You knew, or should have known, you would have a final bill and you should have made sure it was paid.
