Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

I started receiving call from this company in regards to a credit card debt in around September of 2009. I informed them that I was unemployed and that I will obtain an attorney pursue to dispute the amount that they claimed I owed once I have obtained employment. This company continued to call me everyday and each day they called the amount owed increased. Now the account information has been forward to an attorney's office with a debt owed of over $7,000.00 then the collection agency stated in their initial call. Basically the debt went from a little over $6,000.00 to now over $14,000.00. I do not know what to do. Please advise.

Nothing tends to cause more problems than talking with a creditor by phone, and it worsens things a lot to tell them you'll hire a lawyer way down the road, because, realistically, the retainer any lawyer would charge for contested litigation could be more than you owe (so they know you won't).

While we have no way to calculate your debt, bear in mind that most credirt cards charge both a $39 late fee, $39 overlimit fee, and sometimes up interest rates when you are in default. Additionally most agreements provide for attorneys fees.

If you owe even the smaller number, and are not working, one good option may be bankruptcy. See a lawyer about that. With or without bankruptcy, it is simple to stop the calls. The bankruptcy lawyer can assist you with that.
