Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

What is the statute of limitations for a cell phone bill in Georgia? The bill was in dispute with Alltel which was acquired by Verizon a couple of years ago. I opened my account with Alltel in 2003 and closed it in 2007 over a disputed bill. They attempted to collect through several agencies and it has been at least two years since anyone has contacted me on this. After a year or so they sold the debt to Pinnacle Credit or something similar. Today I received a call from Stephens and Michaels on behalf of Pinnacle asking me to set up a check by phone payment or make arrangements. I told the agent I did not owe the bill and was requesting verification. I also stated that 2007 was beyond the statute of limitations regardless. Of course she claimed otherwise and said she was going to advise her client to pursue legal means to collect the debt.

Your statute would run, at the earliest, in 2013.

Any dispute over the bill should have been made in writing, and in making statements by phone, you are helping the creditor come after you.

A smarter move would be to see a lawyer to make a proper dispute over the bill.
