Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Tenant Utility Debt

A tenant moved out of my condo in Dec, 2002. It remained unoccupied for some time. Today, I received notice from a collection agency claiming that I owe $273 to Georgia Natural Gas, for service from Jan through June of 2003. The account was not set up in my name, nor did I authorize it.

Can they hold me liable for the debt incurred by my tenant?

Thank you for your help.

Re: Tenant Utility Debt

If your name is on the account, yes. However, you would then have a claim against the tenant if he/she was responsible for the gas bill according to the lease agreement.
