Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia
what is the time limit for a credit card debt in ga when the account was charged off in august 2008
1 Answer from Attorneys
It is obvious that you do not understand the term "charged off." Charged off is an an accounting term that a creditor has so far been unable to collect and has to take adjust its books. It does NOT mean you don't owe the money, and in fact makes it more likely that you will be sued. The date of a chargeoff has nothing to do with a statute of limitations. It is also a derrogatory term on your credit report that drops you credit score by 100+ points, which makes your car and homeowners insurance go up, hurts your job prospects, and causes credit to cost you more. If you have unpaid bills it would be wise to see a lawyer - YESTERDAY would not be too soon - to avoid suits and garnishments - to see if you have options or defenses (bankruptcy is often the best tool, but sometimes you have other defenses).
