Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia
3 felony charges for a first-ofender
I have been charged with Theft by receiving (two jet ski's and a trailer) Fraud of altered ID, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime, each charge being a felony. If convicted of all 3 charges, I'm looking at a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison!!!! I do not have anything on my record before this, do you think jail time could be avoided? Or should I be realistic and expect to spend some time behind bars?

Get a good criminal lawyer immediately. (Note that our office does not accept criminal cases. If you're in the Atlanta area you may want to start with Attorney Joel Baskin, with offices in East Point and Vinings).
While it would be impossible to predict sentences, it would be unusual for a first time theft case to generate much jail if the person has good legal help. It may be possible to get pretrial diversion and avoid any criminal record, or to get 1st offender status. Other possibilities would include probation, community service, restitution and serving time on weekends.
