Is it possible? Without a lawyer, almost certainly not. With a lawyer - no way for anyone to answer who hasn't interviewed him and talked to the DA. Why does he not yet have a lawyer?

Burglary carries up to 20 years in prison, and the Department of Corrections may make him do most of whatever time he is sentenced to serve. Depending on the jurisdiction and circumstances, a plea to no jail time is possible, and he may even be eligible for first offender treatment where this does not follow him for the rest of his life. However, he is going to be dealing with professional prosecutors who will have little sympathy for his case, so the facts and circumstances will need to be presented in a way to give them a reason to offer such a plea. Therefore, the next 20 years of his life could hinge on whether or not he hires and attorney.
