Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

I was caught with a firearm that I had found in my home. I don't know who it belonged to, but it wasn't stolen. After a domestic incident that had nothing to do with me, police entered my home and found me upstairs with the gun. I was arrested and charged with criminal use of an article with altered ID. Why am I being charged wit that, and what are my chances of receiving probation? I have a felony on my record nearly six years old, will that affect my chances at leniency? What type of sentence am I facing?

I don't know what type of sentence you are facing, but you should expect two charges when you next go to court: (1) possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (the police were probably not aware of your criminal history); and (2) possession of an article with an altered ID.

Your story sounds crazy to me: While responding to a domestic dispute at your home, which had nothing to do with you, the police locate you in the upstairs bedroom with a gun that you just found moments before the police came. What a coincidence. Note: If you found the gun two days earlier, you should have had someone turn it into the police. The fact that you know you are a convicted felon, and you have a gun is indefensible. Therefore, your story will have to be you found the gun two seconds before the police arrived. Good luck with that. Write back and let us all know how that turns out.
