I was charged with a felony in '04 and plead out to a lesser offense as a first offender. My background check shows the original charge. Is that just the way things are done?

Your background check should reveal the original arrest charge, the reduced plea and the first offender disposition. I suspect the employment folks cannot understand the GCIC.
