The purpose of filing an appeal is to try and undo the conviction, by arguing that something was not done right during the trial. If client is not in custody, the appeal is normally meant to get the conviction of the person criminal history. If the person was sentenced to jail, then the purpose of the appeal is to try and get the person out of jail. See website for other info on criminal trials and appeals: www.lawrencelewispc.com

You'd file an appeal to try to reverse the conviction. Whether the appeal has a chance is something to discuss with your lawyer.
