Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

My daughter received an Arrest Warrant Application Hearing Notification in the mail yesterday. It is for Theft by Shoplifting(M). She said she did not steal anything but she was with 2 people that had. She is 18 years old and was getting ready to go in the Air Force. 1) Can we have the court date moved? We have a cruise scheduled for 6/1 - 6/5 and the court date is 6/8, she will not have time to get a public defender? 2) What is the likely outcome if she did not steal and she was just there with them? 3) She is Telling me that she is not missing the cruise and she will not get a Lawyer, I say bad move. Any advice will help.

If she does not show up she will be in contempt and a FTA warrant will be issued and she will spend a few weeks, at least, behind bars and could lose her GA driver's license

She needs to hire Counsel ASAP

Good luck

You say it is a bad move to not get a lawyer, if I am reading correctly...yet you are here asking for advice on an internet forum??? A cruise is in the discussion? Here is the reality - her Air Force plans may not work out if she does not view this as her no. 1 priority in life. You might help her get a good criminal lawyer - obviously in or near the county in which charges are pending - TOMORROW...or she takes a chance on a criminal record and looking for Plan B after the Air Force drops her. 18 is not always mature (hence the situation), but if this does not bring her to reality, what will?

Multi-day cruise and public defender do not even go together. The judge is NOT going to appoint an attorney for your daughter when she or you or both get back from your multi-day cruise. So, I recommend that you retain an attorney. See website for info on retaining the right attorney: http://www.lawrencelewispc.com/pages.php?go=pinfo&PID=38

Good luck
