Is it legal for letters family members wrote on a defendant's behalf, before his sentence, to be made public before the judge has even read them?

How were the letter made public? Was it the intention to make sure the judge read the letters? Did the judge read the letters? So, what is the question about? THE answer: there is no law preventing the distribution of letters from family members. However, rules governing confidential comunications may prohibit an attorney from distributing the letters.
