Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

I live in Georgia, and was recently arrested on a warrant after a routine traffic stop ( checking license , insurance ,etc.) The warrant was for a bad check my ex-wife had written in 2007, is there a statue of limitations on this , I went to court today and it was a misdemeanor , and i was sentenced to pay restitution as well as six months of supervised probation , I did not even write the check or even know there was a bad check out there, when i told the judge this . He replied sucks to be you today. One of the deputies said the verdict was extremely harsh for someone who had NO previous criminal history and told me to file a lawsuit against the city for false arrest . His reason for this was according to him in Georgia there was a two year statute of limitations on misdemeanor warrants, I was wondering if this was true.

You hire a lawyer BEFORE court so that bad things don't happen. Asking after court is over is asking too late. Next time you face a court case, spare yourself a great deal of grief and hire counsel.

You fogot these magic words: "I PLEAD GUILTY". You cannot be sentenced unless and until you are found guilty. In addition, once you plead guilty, all of your pre-trial motions, like statute of limitations are moot. YOu plead guilty, so that is a wrap, but at least you didn't have to pay any attorney's fees.
