Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

Obtain a Paralegal degree with Misdemeanor?

I was charged with a Misdemeanor possesion about 3 years ago. I think the Judge told me once I finished my community service, probation and fine payments it would be dropped from my record. I am in the process of getting a backround check done (thats what the court told me I had to do to find out if it is still on my record). Can i still become a paralegal if the misdemeanor is on my record? If it isn't when asked if I have been convicted on any application do I have to say yes?

Thank You.

Re: Obtain a Paralegal degree with Misdemeanor?

If you were sentenced as a first offender, you have not been convicted and can so answer. Your response to a question asking if you have ever been arrested, may require some special attention.

I frankly do not know if a misdemeanor conviction will prohibit you from qualifying as a paralegal. It may turn on the question of whether or not the crime is one involving moral turpitude. I would not think that simple possession rises to that level.

If you are taking a course, I would discuss your situation with the school personnel. Good Luck.
