Generally, to check up on the parties and see where the case stands. If there are motions outstanding, the judge may rule on them during the status conference. Nothing to fear.

I disagree with Phillip. The answer depends on the case. If you have a criminal case, you need counsel and your attorney will discuss the significance of your conference (and attend).
