What rights do I have?

When I was 19, nine years ago, I was arrested for getting into a public fight. Because of things the police did incorrectly I never went to court, nor did I ever make a plea. I was under the impression that the charges had been dismissed. However, I was just denied a job that I am qualified for because of my past ''criminal'' history. I received in the mail, a packet from the company that I had requested employment from, stating that they used a firm that reported that I had a criminal past. They included a copy of the information they received, and the information was not accurate at all. I was arrested in 1996, and was held for five days. The paperwork stated that I was arrested once in 96, and then again in 2000 for the exact same charges. I have contacted the local authorites and they are not willing to help me with this matter. I need to know if I need to get a lawyer and sue the city, or if there is another way I can get this cleared up. Also I received an email today(July 12, 2005)from another company who has denied me employment also because of my ''criminal'' record. So it seems that this is becoming a quick problem. Assuming that there was no conviction there is a way to have your record cleared without filing a lawsuit. You should first obtain a copy of your record to determine what appears on your criminal history. Please feel free to contact me to discuss this in further detail at 770-612-0909.
