Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia
Shoplifting
I was recently charged with misdeamor shoplifting. This is my first shoplifting offense, in fact, my first run-in ever with the law. The item was a $50.00 pair of shoes. I have a court date scheduled. What sentence am I looking at if I plead guilty? Would there be any possibity of jail time considering this is my first offense? Should I hire a lawyer for such a petty crime?

Re: Shoplifting
You should hire a lawyer. There are procedures available to protect your record, which I think are important enough to warrant representation.
There is no special category of petty crime. It is not looked at as petty, by prospective employers. To take a cavalier attitude about your criminal record may say something about your character in the eyes of a prospective employer. On the other hand, the fact that you thought enough about the situation to submit the question, shows your are a caring person. That said, go get an attorney. What I have in mind is a simple procedure, and should not result in signifcant costs. But you need to do this before the case is arraigned.
