Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

shoplifting

My son has been arrested for shoplifting. He is 18, and was arrested in Gwinnett County Georgia. I will not bail him out, and he is going to have to deal with the consequences of his actions, but I would like to know what those will be. How long from the time he was arrested until his court date, and what will his sentence likely be. I think this was a misdemeanor, and his other arrest was when he was 17, so I do not know if it will count against him.

Re: shoplifting

About 2 months will

elapse between the time he was arrested and his court date. Even with a prior juvenile offense, he will probably be eligible for pretrial diversion, which consists of around 24 hours of community service, a shoplifting "awareness" class, which they offer at places like Northside Hospital, and various other conditions that are worked out with the prosecutor. Once those conditions are met, the charges are dismissed and the arrest can be expunged from his record.
