Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia
Son was arrested, 07/2000; denied bail; sentenced, 08/2001. Has to served 14 years to be eligible for parole. Does the 14 year count start when he was arrested or when he was sentenced?
1 Answer from Attorneys
The 14 years begin at the point where he is arrested, IF he was not in custody on any other holds (probation, parole, offense in another jurisdiction). I suspect that he was convicted of MURDER, because in 2001, murder was the only offense for which life meant 14 years before you were eligible for parole. However, you should recognize that he was sentenced to life, which means that he is eligble for parole in 14 years, but may be denied parole on the 14 year, and have to wait another 5-6 years for the next eligibility for parole. The victim' sfamily will have some say in the matter also. See website for other helpful hints: www.lawrencelewispc.com. Good luck.
