Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

My son is facing some serious time, he is on probation and just this New Years Eve was staying at a girls house helping her out to have a place to stay and keep away from trouble. They were ALL drinking , @ midnight my son calls and tells me Goodnight happy new year I love you mom then @ 4am or so I get a call from jail. My son and this girl was about to go to bed and 3 guys showed up around 3am (drinking), my son and the girl was in the bedroom talking and she was crying upset about her 18 yr old son or something and my son stated he was just consoling her and these guys busted in on them after being told to leave. My son was laying down trying to go to sleep and when they pushed their way in he rolled over and pointed an unloaded gun at them, needless to say the 3 guys called the cops the girl lied about the gun and they took my son and the girl to jail, the 3 guys didn't go to jail for breaking in on them after being told to leave. The year before this my son was assulted by a guy that was out of jail with murder charges and he didn't know but that it may have been this guy and some friends, this guy stomped my sons face in a bar bathroom and broke his jaws in a couple places and my son has screws and metal in his face now, he was backed by the victim witness program. At any rate this DA is wanting my son to accept the deal of 10 do 5 this is not fair he was only trying to defend them and he is not going to accept this but he goes to a trial and loses he could face ALL this time. I don't know what to do for him but pray and finish raising his 9yr old daughter that he is really close with and this would break her heart to have to go see him behind bars, shes never had to do this. Please ANY Good advise would help, he has a court appointed attorney which is married to this DA??
