Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

My son flew to Chicago at his own expense to begin a new position in a club owned by a family friend. When he got there, the position was not readily available. The friend was locked out by the landlord and had been banned from the property. The friend had no money, no place for my son to stay and my son had no money to hang around. The friend did have a vehicle that he could not drive because his license was suspended so him and my son decided that my son could drive the vehicle home to Atlanta. My son called another friend in Atlanta and got money wired to him and drove home. The vehicle has an expired dealer tag and bad tires. Now the friend says we should drive the truck back because he needs it. He has the title and the plates but won't send them. The friend is threatening to report the vehicle stolen and have my son arrested. My son did not steal the vehicle it was given to him. He had several options presented. He could come home and get money to survive untill the friend got his bar back or they could work out a payment plan. I think the friend needs to get his vehicle out of my driveway. My son can not afford to buy it and the friend has no job for him. Does the law say we have to pay to get the vehicle back to Chicago?
