My son and husband did work out of state. My son was paid by check. When he attempted to cash the check, a stop payment had been placed on the check, What do we do now?

Not a criminal problem. You get in contact with the person that your son did work for and ask for the money. If he blows you off, you need to return to the state and sue the person in Magistrate court (small claims court). Good luck.

In most states, you go there and sue.
