It does little good to guess. The important detail is that he is charged with a crime and his future record and driving privileges are at risk. He needs a good traffic lawyer (in the county in which the incident happened) to deal with it. Now.

He either went to court and requested a jury trial, or a bind over, or did not know what to say, because everyone knows everything until they get to court. See website for info on retaining the right attorney, now: http://www.lawrencelewispc.com/pages.php?go=pinfo&PID=38
Good luck
