Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

State Case Changed to Federal

This case was originally going to be a state case (First offense, nonviolent). A plea bargain was arranged by a federal agent and once the plea bargain was completed, the agents changed the case to a federal case. I don't know whether an immunity letter was signed (I think that is required in a federal case?), but the prosecution is now charging the defendant with a conspiracy charge. What is going on and what legal protection is there?
