Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

How many years will 7 counts of theft by taking and a burglary charge get you in Georgia? This is what my brother is facing as the result of stealing aluminum bars from his job. How many years could the sentence be and how much time would he have to serve? Thank you, in advance.

No one can answer the question beyond telling you that burglary carries 1-20 years and felony theft by taking carries 1-10 years while misdemeanor theft carries up to 12 months. What the plea offer will be or what the judge will accept is case specific. If you view my website, I give explanations about how plea offers are constructed: www.lawrencelewispc.com. In addition, one of my podcasts specifically addresses plea offers. You can get to the podcast via my consultation page on my website. Good luck.

He could get up to 20 years in prison for burglary and depending on the value of the property stolen, he could get up to 10 years on each theft count. If those ran consecutively, he could serve 90 years in prison.

Of course he could do better. One way to make sure he does very badly is for him not get a lawyer very early. One way to possibly improve his situation is to get a lawyer. (He probably gets far less than 90 years). He needs a lawyer ASAP.
