My 88 yr old dad went to a car dealership last week and purchased a $40K new car that he did not need. He already has a car and truck and is a terrible driver. He did it in secret, paid cash and I am sure the car salesman took advantage of him, but he and my 84 yr old mom reject help and advice and will not let me in their business. Is there anything I can do to keep them from making bad decisions or do I just sit back and watch them self-destruct? They do not want anyone to be their POA or have any control over them but their minds are slipping. I am retired and do not need their money. Feel they are targets for bad guys.

Go see a good elder care lawyer in your area and have a discussion about them, and the lawyer will advise you as to what can be done, if anything. The sooner the better if their ability to make decisions and control their finances is slipping.
If they are truly at a stage where their mental competence is minimal, an elder care lawyer may be able to assist you in probate court to become the guardian/conservator. The facts of the case need to be analyzed carefully as this is a big responsibility and far from an automatic process. Act sooner rather than later.
