Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia
In 1996, I was ordered to pay child support for two kids
($200 a month). I got behind in payments and the father took me to court in 2001 when the amount increased to $250 a month. I paid until 2009 when I stopped working to help my son and his wife with their first child. Now they are both out of the military and have three kids. The mom is physically partially disabled and needs help with the the kids. I have been living with them for the past 5 1/2 years. Original case was in Alabama. Now I live in Georgia where the father lives who had physical custody of our girls. Girls are now 21and 22. Father has registered the order
In Georgia. I am also a full time student almost to graduate in June 2015. What advice can you give me?

If you owe past due child support, the father can file a contempt or register it with Child Support Enforcement. You will be required to pay the past due and possibly interest. Failure to do so could result in your driver's license being suspended. Under Georgia law, voluntarily quitting a job to help provide childcare for a grandchild is not a valid excuse. Under Georgia law you are in contempt of court. I don't know Alabama law, but assume it is the same in that regard.
