Do I need an attorney just to answer a summons I received for "child support modification" from my childen's father?

That depends on whether you would rather lose the case or have a chance of doing well in it. As a general rule, you will do badly without a lawyer. And while a lawyer isn't a guarantee of a win, it boosts your chances.
