Charges are up to law enforcement and prosecutors - there is no requirement that anyone "press charges." In domestic disputes, they often pursue charges and a conviction even over the objection of the victim. Having a boyfriend who abuses or assaults you is a sign to get out. It usually does not stop and often gets worse, especially if you don't do anything about it.
You won't want to rethink this, but do not help your "boyfriend." Almost all the time, a person who abuses will abuse again, and it will usually get worse. Your life could be at stake. Go to the nearest battered women's shelter or call them for a mental health referal to find out why you are asking a questgion you should not be asking.
Now the legal part: the state presses charges. You are merely a witness. It is not up to you whether or not he is prosecuted. Aggravated assault is a serious felony and can result in some cases in significant jail time.
I wish you the best of luck.
